German Airways and Italy's ITA Airways enter into wet-lease partnership

The new state-owned Italian airline ITA Airways and German Airways are cooperating: The airline, which was only founded in October last year, will in future operate two Embraer E190s from Germany's second-oldest airline on its European route network under wet lease. The partnership will start at the end of March 2022.

German Airways operates a fleet of five modern and economical Embraer E190s, which the company leases out to other airlines as wet leases, complete with crews. Sports clubs and companies also like to use the 100-seater aircraft for charter business.

From 28 March 2022, ITA Airways customers will be able to fly directly from Milan Linate to destinations such as London City, Luxembourg and Geneva. At these airports and destinations, profitability and operating conditions are guaranteed by smaller aircraft. This also explains the choice of the Embraer E190 from German Airways. This aircraft type is not currently part of the ITA Airways fleet. At this stage, the co-operation is fully in line with ITA's corporate strategy to test the market with a selected fleet and a specific partner in order to achieve economic and operational efficiency.

Maren Wolters, Managing Director of German Airways: "We are delighted that ITA is working with us. We can benefit from the excellent reputation that we have worked hard to earn: We are known as a very reliable service provider with great expertise in the industry. With ITA, another major European airline joins our customer base, which already includes renowned European airlines."

ITA Airways is Italy's new national airline. The member of the SkyTeam aviation alliance is 100 % state-owned via the Ministero dell'Economia e delle Finanze.
