WDL Aviation becomes German Airways - future-orientated into 2021

Cologne/Bonn, 17 December 2020. WDL is taking off under a new name with immediate effect: The airline is now officially and commercially known as German Airways. The corresponding entry in the commercial register has been completed. The operating licence (AOC) for the new German Airways has now been reissued by the German Federal Aviation Office. Along with the name, the callsign will also change from "WDL" to "German Eagle". The new ICAO three-letter code for the airline of the Zeitfracht Group will no longer be WDL, but GER.

As the second oldest German airline and the oldest independent airline in Germany, the airline, which was originally founded in July 1955, is a piece of German aviation history. The new name continues the airline's long tradition, which is characterised by reliability, high quality standards and an unusual team spirit among its employees. Now that the ex-WDL itself has mastered the coronavirus year 2020 with all its challenges, it is flexibly positioned for the future with its new name German Airways and a modern brand identity.

The airline had already entered a new era in recent months with the introduction of Embraer E190 jets. In the summer of this year, the last BAe also left the company: For a very long time, WDL was characterised by the so-called Jumbolino with its four engines. With the current 100-seater regional aircraft from Embraer, the company is optimally equipped for the coming years with a suitable capacity size.

The Jumbolinos have travelled for well-known airlines such as Air France, Atlantic Airways, Austrian Airways, British Airways, Brussels Airlines, EasyJet, Eurowings, Germanwings, KLM, LTU or SAS and many more. Airbus and BMW were happy to charter the reliable aircraft for their works traffic. The BAe 146, which can land and take off on very short runways, was also very popular in motorsport. The new team aircraft is now building on this business, bringing many league teams and top sports clubs to their competitions and training camps in good health, even in times of crisis.
